Art has always been a
way of centering myself and making sense of my life-experiences. Through
the years, I have dabbled in many media, including black and white photography,
pottery, fiber arts and
watercolor. Each of these has contributed in some way to the artwork I
now enjoy creating.
Gourds, and the art of embellishing them, are as old as
mankind. As they are a product of nature,
no two are exactly alike. I have a reverence for the gourd itself with
it's own unique shape, texture and
coloration. I try to compliment it's qualities in whatever designs I
choose. I use some combination of pyrography (wood burning), dyes, acrylic
paint, inlay of crushed stone (turquoise, lapis, etc.), carving,
beadwork, weaving, basket coiling, or other embellishments in my work.
I find it exciting to work on round and curved shapes, especially on
the wood-like surface of the gourd. The designs I use are constantly
evolving and changing.
